Discovering Opportunity in the Every Day

Opportunity

Yesterday, I free-wrote on the word Opportunity {link to that post here} provided by Lisa-Jo Baker and 5 Minute Fridays. I enjoyed that exercise. But, 5 minutes goes rather quickly and I guess I had more to learn. I am in the Bible {I use the English Standard Version} this morning and look what I found. I am excited to share this with you!!

From Paul’s Letter to the Galatians – Paul is concerned that the Galatians are so quickly abandoning the teachings of Jesus Christ and turning to “a different gospel”.

I am astonished you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Gal. 1:6-10)

And then look what Paul says in Chapters 5 and 6.

For you were called to freedom, brothers (and sisters). Only do not use your freedom as an Opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Gal. 5: 13-14)

AND

Brothers (and sisters) if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Gal. 6:1-3)

We were given freedom, or free will, to make our own choices. However, Paul cautions us – Do No Use Your Freedom As An Opportunity for the Flesh.

What does our flesh, or our sinful nature, want? To serve itself instead of others, instead of God. Selfish motivations come naturally to us. That is the sin of the flesh.

Instead, Paul teaches us – commands us, “Through Love serve one another”, serve your husband or wife, serve your children, serve your neighbor, serve the stranger. Through Love. It is all Grace, my friend.

And, then Paul takes it a step further. If anyone is caught in any transgression, or sin, I – as a spiritual person – am called to RESTORE him with a spirit of Gentleness. Beautiful!

Does gentleness come naturally for me? No, not at all. In fact, I can be rather blunt and direct.

But, I can choose to be Gentle. I can choose to pray for a Spirit of Gentleness.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Gal. 5:22,23)

My take away from this? My Spirit of Gentleness has the POWER TO RESTORE another human being. Yes! That is what it is saying. The Holy Spirit can gift me with gentleness and with that, through Christ, he gives me the authority and power to Restore another. And, he gives another the power to restore me in my sin.

That is Miraculous!

We were made to be in community with one another. We were made to live side by side lifting each other up in time of struggle, bearing another’s burden when they are weak, leaning into another when we have no strength of our own.

Opportunity. What a word!

newly purposed,

jana

Suggestion: Paul’s Letter to the Galatians is full of messages of hope and encouragement.  It is only 6 Chapters long. I encourage you to read it today. Link here to read the entire letter. Happy Sunday, Friends!
