Giveaway! “7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess” by Jen Hatmaker

“7 is the true story of how Jen took seven months, identified seven areas of excess, and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence. In the spirit of a fast, she pursued a deeply reduced life in order to find a greatly increased God.”

You can find out more about the author, Jen Hatmaker, and watch the Book Trailer for “7” at .

I found out about this book at the Bloom (in)courage website.  Bloom (in)courage is the DaySpring online book club/blog. I have enjoyed following the (in)courage blog for some time. Just recently I learned they have an on-line book club at Bloom.

I most often prefer book clubs where I can meet my friends, share a bottle of wine, and catch up on each other’s lives discuss the book.

But, “7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess” by Jen Hatmaker caught my eye. And, I thought, “Hmmm….an online book club. This could be interesting”.

Having just moved, trying to get my family of four unpacked, organized, connected – not to mention fed, clothed, and nurtured, I have been feeling very overwhelmed with all of the excess in our life.

Stuff. Stuff. Stuff.

A garage full of sporting equipment.

Legos {need I say more}.

You get the picture.

I have not participated in a Bloom (in)courage book discussion group before. But, I wanted to try this one because the topic feels so relevant to me – right now.

Also, I can see how the “modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence” are negatively influencing me, my husband, and my two young, impressionable boys. Taking our eyes off of Christ. Tempting us with focus on self.

I cannot ignore the excesses anymore. I want to fight back, too!

The whole set-up over at Bloom (in)courage appears to be very well organized. And, “7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess” has 100+ 5-star ratings on Amazon.

Would any of you care to join me as I read “7” and participate in the on-line book club at Bloom (in)courage?

I have two copies to give away!

Even if you choose not to participate in the Bloom (in)courage book club discussion, I would still enjoy reading your thoughts and comments at jana’s three dresses’ facebook page as you read through the book. I hope that we can encourage one another.

Please leave a comment below indicating your interest. I will randomly select two winners by Monday, August 20th. The Bloom Book Club begins August 27th.

(Disclosure: I am not receiving financial compensation for the promotion of this book. I simply want to read it and share its message with others. I think it is that important a topic.)

  1. Someone told me about this book today … and then I saw your comment on my blog and hopped over to read your heart and there it is again. This is going on the must read list (even if I don’t win:) as we seek to answer my question in our family. Can’t wait to read tomorrow.

I dropped off an old pan, some kids clothes, and a bag of my hubby’s old shirts and shorts today at our thrift shop. My daughter started school a few days ago and the moment she was out of the house I went through her book shelf and gave away a stack of younger books and puzzles! I’d like to “Bloom” with you. Miss you.

  3. I am so excited to start this book discussion – my first with Bloom as well! I’ve been searching for this book near me but I can’t find it anywhere, and I’m putting a kibosh on online shopping for a while so I’d love to be entered into the drawing! Thanks so much for holding one, and I’m loving your blog! :)

  4. I would LOVE to get a copy. This is a topic I read (and write) frequently about and have wanted to read this but my library doesn’t have it. And, yes, I can’t afford it right now. Thanks so much for offering the giveaway!

    • Hi Johanna, Welcome to to jana’s three dresses. Absolutely! You will be entered into the drawing. I have gotten a lot of response. I am encouraged to know that others struggle with the excess in their lives as well. Peace to you and Happy Weekend, jana

  7. I have been eyeing this book for a few months now, but did not want to do it alone. I am so excited about the opportunity to do the book club @ bloom. Ever since returning from Africa, I have become sick and over-whelmed by the excess we have here (my own home included) and this book both thrills me and makes me nervous. 😉

    • Hi there, I am happy to enter your name into the drawing. I am so happy you found your way to jana’s three dresses. I am excited about doing this book with other women as well. A necessary, but tough road as I reevaluate everything in my life! ~ jana

    • Hi Niki, Absolutely! I am so glad you like the blog. It is such a fun avenue for self-expression. I think you will truly love the book. I am writing a post today about Lessons on Excess based on the book. I only just received it yesterday, but I can’t put it down. ~ jana

  8. Great book recommendation! That is something I could definitely use more of, which is to say, LESS :)

I’m loving your blog, Jana. Blessings to you!

    • Hi Sweet Valerie,
Thank you for your support and encouragement. I am so happy to have you along for the ride. Our time together in Belgium with our three little boys was so precious. The book is great. I just received it yesterday and can’t put it down. She has me laughing out loud to the point of tears. I try and read sections to Mike and I can’t relax enough to get the words out. I know you will love her candor and find her message convicting. With love, jana P.S. Congrats to you all!!!

    • Hi Mindy, Great to see you here at jana’s three dresses. Welcome! I just received the book today and have taken a sneak peek. It looks so fun! The author is absolutely entertaining. I will put you in the drawing on Monday. ~jana

  9. Thank you everyone for your wonderful response to this giveaway! It seems I am not alone in my concern over our country’s habits in excess. So glad I will have many of you along for the ride as we explore this topic and challenge ourselves to change some of our habits. It is always more fun to have company when we are trying to make changes in our lives.

I will announce the winner on Monday, August 20th. Invite your friends to enter as well. We can fight this! ~ jana

  10. I’m interested! I’m frequently looking for ways to let go of our excess. My favorite book on the topic is Happy Are You Poor by Thomas Dubay. He explains the meaning of Gospel poverty and then helps the reader connect that to everyday living. I’m looking forward to reading 7 to get another perspective (& spark my faith to get back on track!).

    • Thank you, Michelle, for your comment! I haven’t heard of that book, but will be checking it out. I received my copy of the book today. It looks great, and challenging. Happy to know you will joining me. ~ jana

  11. I would be interested in this, Jana! I’ve never participated in an online book club either but I know I certainly need to learn the lessons this book provides. Thank you for offering the giveaway but if many people are interested, I will gladly buy the book myself. I’ll check the website for details on the book club. Thank you for the info!

    • Hi Della Sue,

I have had a lot of interest. Hmmm…seems I am not the only one concerned about the excess in my life and how it separates me from God. I would be happy to enter you in the drawing if you would like. Just please let me know before Monday. Thank you for your comment and continued support. ~ jana

  12. I have had this book on my “to read” list ever since I heard about it on back in February. I would love the opportunity to read it and share my thoughts on Facebook and my blog. Thanks for the opportunity!

    • Hi Shelley, I have the book in my hand. I was reading the intro today during the boy’s Tae Kwon Do class. I was laughing out loud to myself with tears in my eyes. The author is that funny. I know you will love her writing and be pleased with the message. Love, jana

  13. Hi Jana!
I would love to join the online book club and read this book! Sounds very intersting.

Hope you are doing well. I am loving your website and look forward to your posts.
    Miss you,

  14. Sign me up for the drawing please. I’m drowning in stuff over here, but still shopping for the “right” things for our house (clothes for work, school supplies, etc). I would love to engage in conversations about ways to reduce the “clutter” and refocus on what really matters. Thanks, Jana!

  15. I’m excited to start the book study at in bloom also. This will be my first one too! Thanks for the chance to win the book.

I would love to hear from you!
